Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about steam boilers, service, project approach and the operation of Belgian Boiler Company.
Technical questions about steam boilers & heating solutions
An electric steam boiler generates steam from electrical energy instead of gas or other fuels. It is particularly interesting for applications with limited to medium steam demand, where fast start-up, emission-free on-site operation and low maintenance requirements are important. Belgian Boiler Company (BBC) often applies electric steam boilers in environments with stringent emission regulations or where green power is available.
Electrode steam boilers from Belgian Boiler Company can be connected to medium voltage (typically 6 kV to 15 kV) or high voltage (e.g., 20 kV or higher). The voltage level chosen depends on the desired power, the available grid connection and the site-specific infrastructure.
The choice of power and voltage level depends on several factors, such as steam demand, grid capacity, business strategy, available space and possible participation in flexibility markets. Belgian Boiler Company assists customers in this analysis to arrive at a technically and economically optimal solution.
Low voltage electric resistance boilers are typically used up to several megawatts. Typical installations are between 0.5 and 5.5 MW, depending on grid connection and application. At Belgian Boiler Company, we often see that for higher powers, several boilers are placed in parallel or electrodetechnology is chosen.
Electric boilers from Belgian Boiler Company are considered a future-oriented technology, especially when combined with renewable energy, heat networks and smart grid control. They produce no local emissions, are easy to integrate into digital and hybrid energy systems, and are perfectly in line with stricter environmental legislation and the further electrification of industrial processes.
Belgian Boiler Company’s HV electrode steam boilers offer very high controllability, rapid response to power fluctuations and can deliver large steam outputs with a relatively compact installation. They have no burners, no fumes and therefore low maintenance requirements. Their flexibility makes them ideal for hybrid boiler houses and for applications within the electricity and flexibility market.
Electrode steam boilers are designed for high to very high power ratings. Depending on the voltage level and design, power ratings from 5 MW to more than 60 MW are possible within a single boiler. Belgian Boiler Company supplies and integrates such powers for large industrial steam networks and energy intensive applications.
A steam boiler produces pressurized steam for industrial processes, while an industrial heating boiler provides hot water for space heating or indirect process heating. The two systems differ greatly in design, pressure class, and safety requirements.
Electric steam boilers are ideal in environments where emission-free generation, low maintenance costs and compact installation are important. They are often used in electrification projects or when gas is not available or desired.
Yes, electric boilers are well suited to play in the electricity flexibility market. Thanks to their quick adjustability, they can temporarily take more or less power according to grid needs or price signals. Belgian Boiler Company regularly integrates electric boilers into installations with energy management systems, which can contribute to lower energy costs and additional revenues through flexibility services.
In a hybrid boiler house, an electric boiler works together with existing gas, steam or hot water boilers. For example, the electric boiler can be used when electricity prices are low, when CO₂ costs are high, or as peak and backup power. Belgian Boiler Company designs hybrid boiler houses that thus provide additional operational flexibility and security of supply, without complete replacement of existing installations.
Low-voltage electric steam boilers typically operate at 400 V or 690 V. These voltage levels make integration into existing industrial low-voltage grids relatively easy, without heavy high-voltage infrastructure. Belgian Boiler Company takes into account the available grid infrastructure at the site when designing.
A high-voltage electrode steam boiler is an electric steam boiler in which steam is generated by passing electric current directly through the water. Thanks to the use of high voltage, very high power can be achieved in a compact installation. Belgian Boiler Company (BBC) applies this type of boiler to large industrial steam demands and applications with strong power variations.
Hybrid boilers combine gas-fired and electric heating elements. They offer flexibility in energy management and can respond to variable energy rates or carbon reduction targets.
Yes, Belgian Boiler Company offers mobile steam boiler units in various capacities for temporary or seasonal applications, such as maintenance, peak load or emergencies.
Revamping includes the partial or complete modernization of an existing boiler plant. This can range from burner upgrades to automation, efficiency optimization or adaptation to new standards.
Absolutely. All our boilers are CE-approved and compliant with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU). For emissions, we take into account Vlarem II, BREF regulations and local permit requirements.
We are closely following developments around hydrogen and other renewable sources. Electric boilers are already a direct zero-emission solution today. Upon request, we are looking at hybrid or H₂-ready solutions.
Yes. We custom design boilers and accessories (water treatment, steam manifolds,…) to meet sector requirements such as hygienic design (food), validation requirements (GMP) or ATEX zones (chemistry).

Steam technology, durability & efficiency
Our industrial steam boilers achieve standard efficiencies of up to 95%, depending on type and configuration. When integrating economizers or condensing technology, this can go up to 105% at lower value (for hot water boilers). Belgian Boiler Company designs each installation with a focus on thermal efficiency, sizing according to the consumption profile, and minimum downtime. In addition, we optimize control (e.g., via modulating burners or O₂ trimming) to maintain favorable combustion even at part load. This translates into lower gas consumption and less CO₂ emissions on an annual basis.
Absolutely. We offer solutions that fit the climate objectives of industrial companies. These include electric or hybrid steam boilers, heat recovery, optimization of existing installations (revamping), and advice on boiler house modernization. Belgian Boiler Company participates in studies on CO₂ reduction, provides technical support for subsidies (such as via the Flemish VEKA or the Walloon AWAC), and helps customers to structurally reduce their Scope 1 emissions.
Yes, absolutely. Quality water treatment is critical to the life and safety of any steam installation. Untreated or poorly treated feed water causes scale formation, corrosion, foaming and increased energy consumption. Belgian Boiler Company provides integrated solutions for softening, degassing, dosing and desalination. We also help monitor the correct water quality parameters in accordance with standards (such as VDI 2035 or EN 12953-10).
Project approach & installation
Turnaround time varies depending on the type of project. For a standard installation of a hot water or steam boiler, you can count on 8 to 14 weeks from order to commissioning. For complex projects – such as complete boiler houses or H₂-ready installations – that can be as much as 20 weeks, including engineering, prefabrication and test phases. Belgian Boiler Company always ensures a strict planning with clear milestones, and coordinates its activities with other contractors or technical services on the site.
Yes. Each project is assigned a project engineer as the central point of contact. This person coordinates all phases: from quotation and technical proposal to execution, testing and delivery. He/she also remains involved in post-delivery service. In this way we guarantee technical continuity, clear communication and quick follow-up in case of questions or changes.
Shell boilers (fire-tube boilers) are suitable for small and medium steam capacities and are most commonly used in industry. They are compact, reliable and relatively easy to maintain. Water tube boilers (water tube boilers) are more complex, but suitable for very high capacities and pressures. Belgian Boiler Company only supplies fire-tube boilers as these give the most advantages in use and maintenance.
Quality, certification & guarantees
As standard, we offer a 12-month warranty on all new installations and parts. Bosch boilers often carry a factory warranty of up to 24 months when commissioned correctly. Belgian Boiler Company also offers optional extended warranty contracts in combination with periodic maintenance by our technicians. This not only extends the warranty, but also demonstrably extends the life of the installation.
If the installation is located in an explosion risk zone (e.g. solvent tanks, silos), we ensure implementation according to ATEX directives (2014/34/EU). This includes adapted electrical components, ventilation, pressure relief and an ATEX compliant burner or control. Belgian Boiler Company has experience with installations in ATEX zone 2 (and partly zone 1) for the chemical and food industries, among others.
We are VCA** certified and work in compliance with PED directives, EN standards, and industry regulations. Our technicians have approvals for gas combustion, welding, and electrical work. As an authorized Bosch partner, we are qualified to install, start-up, and maintain UL-S and CSB boilers according to factory conditions.
Digitization & follow-up
For new boiler houses, we offer on request 3D models and digital twins (e.g. in SolidWorks or AutoCAD Plant 3D) for integration into your BIM model or technical plans. This facilitates project coordination, clashes in piping and future extensions. For larger projects, we also use remote visualization via HMI/SCADA dashboards for real-time follow-up.
For boilers with advanced controls (e.g. Bosch BCO), we can log signals (temperature, pressure, boiler water level) and detect deviations. This creates a basis for predictive maintenance. Combined with periodic analysis and AI-assisted interpretation, downtimes can be predicted and preventively avoided.
Yes. We provide periodic consumption reports (steam production, gas consumption, efficiency, etc.) via export from the PLC or SCADA software on request. For connected systems, automatic reporting is also possible via mail or cloud. This supports ISO 50001 trajectories or internal energy audits.
