Belgian Boiler Company is ready for a low-carbon future

In just about every sector today, efforts are being made to reduce emissions of harmful greenhouse gases such as CO2. Alternatives to fossil fuels as energy sources are also being sought in abundance for the production of process heat.

Although its rollout will not be obvious, today we can say that BBC NV together with Bosch Industriekessel GmbH have the technologies ready to make this conversion possible!

To that end, BBC NV is committed to three pillars.

  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Alternative and renewable fuels
  • Electrification of steam boilers.

Initially, we can significantly improve the efficiency of existing boiler houses. Recent figures show that even today a savings potential of 20 to even 30% is possible in many industrial heat consumers. Simply by applying the best available energy-saving technologies. That’s why BBC NV has been offering the most high-performance steam installations on the market for more than 20 years, but also modernizations of existing boiler houses are among our possibilities.

And we are going much further. Together with Bosch, we searched for alternatives to conventional combustion of natural gas or fuel oil in steam boilers in order to completely eliminate fossil fuels. This resulted in a steam boiler design compatible with renewable fuels such as biogases but also hydrogen. What is remarkable here is that today our customers do not have to make a choice as to which type of fuel they wish to use in the future. With a wise selection and design in advance, a later retrofit to an alternative fuel is possible without having to renew the entire boiler!

Finally, as in other sectors, we are looking at the potential of electricity as an energy carrier. When electricity is generated from renewable sources, such as wind or solar power, it can be a viable alternative to fossil fuels. It is certainly not the case that an electric steam boiler will only become profitable if the price of gas rises above that of electricity. Bosch electric boilers have a number of features worth considering. For example, the boilers have a wide modulation range and can be started up very quickly, making them ideal for backup and standby applications. Due to the absence of fuel and flue gases, they are emission free and require a lot less maintenance. On sites where self-generation of electricity is in operation today, they are the ideal partner to handle peaks in power production given the large buffer capacity of steam boilers and can thus balance the power grid.

Precisely for this reason, Bosch developed two alternatives. On the one hand, the all-electric boiler ELSB with outputs ranging from 240kW (350kg steam/h) to 5MW (7 tons of steam/h). On the other hand, the hybrid steam boiler which, in addition to a conventional gas burner, is equipped with an additional electric heater of up to 5MW. The latter allows this boiler to switch seamlessly from conventional fuels to electricity and thus respond to the availability of different energy sources. If then also the burner is fed with renewable fuels, the circle is complete.
